DESCRIPTION:
Tambopata National Reserve is a nature reserve in the Peruvian Amazon Basin south of the Madre de Dios River in Tambopata Province'sInambari and Tambopata districts. It was created on January 26, 1990, to protect the forests adjacent to the rivers Heath and Tambopata that have two important ecosystems and are noted for its biodiversity, representing native flora and fauna with 165 species and 41 families of trees, 103 species of mammals, 1300 species of butterflies and 90 species of amphibians.
The reserve is located across the regions of Madre de Dios and Puno:
GEOGRAPHY
It has a superface area of 1,478,942 hectares (3,654,550 acres).
The Sandoval Lake is located in this area. There is also a circuit of canoeing which is considered one of the most exciting and beautiful circuit of Peru.
The protected area features eight life zones: subtropical humid forest, tropical humid forest, subtropical high-humidity forest, subtropical high-humidity foothills cloud forest, subtropical rainforest, tropical cloud forest foothills, subtropical lower foothills cloud forest and semi-flooded subtropical cloud forest.
Average annual temperature is 26°C, ranging from 10-38°C; with average annual rainfall of 1600–2400 mm. Rainfall in the protected area is typical of most areas in the Peruvian Amazon. The climate is humid and (3000 mm and 25°C on average), sub-level humidity.

TOUR DESCRIPTION: 5 DAYS AND 4 NIGHTS: MONKEY ISLAND, SANDOVAL LAKE AND MACAW
CLAY LICK
Day 01: WELCOME AND MONKEY ISLAND.
Our transfer
will pick you up from the airport or bus station. You’ll then go to office
to register (passport number and flight number).breakfast not included Then
we’ll take the boat down Madre de Dios Rver to get to our Lodge. After a
one-hour boat ride, you’ll arrive at the Lodge where we’ll have relaxing
morning.
After resting
for a bit, and have lunch, we’ll go for a two-hour walk in the monkey´s island,
which is jsut across from our Lodge. Our guide will tell you about the lush
vegetation (some trees are 500 years old). You’ll also have the chance to see
some birds, monkeys, butterflies. You’ll discover our wonderful jungle.
In the
evening, you and our guide will go for a boat ride on Madre de Dios River to
look for caimans. You’ll spot the shiny red eyes of the caimans with a
flashlight.
Back at the
Lodge you will be served dinner and sleep.
Second day: VISITING SANDOVAL LAKE
After
breakfast, we’ll go to the Tambopata National Reserve. After 3km. walking in
the jungle and head towards the Sandoval lake (habitat of Piranhas) one of the
largest lake in the Tambopata National Reserve, and sail in paddle canoe to
observe monkeys and great variety of birds and different species (shansho
cormorant Jacanas, puma heron, vultures, howler monkey, monkey monk, black
capuchin, tamarins and sloths). Maybe we will meet with the family of giant
otters (almost two meters long) which is endangered and the largest alligators
over 4 meters long, return to the lodge to enjoy a typical lunch and free afternoon
to observe an extraordinary spectacle of the sunset over the Madre de Dios
River. Dinner and sleep.
Third day: LOOKING FOR THE CLAY
LICK
We’ll wake up early to get to a tower, which is about 40 meters high. Once
there you’ll have a panoramic view over
the trees to see different
species of birds, such as macaws, parrots and others.
After going over the
canopy we will prepare for a challenge activity over the trees where our
instructor guide will give us an introduced on how to use the safety arnet for
the zip-line, feeling the adrenaline on trees, return to the lodge.
After our breakfast we will back to the city of Puerto Maldonado, then a
4X4 van will drive us 2 hours aproximately to Tambopata River to our lodge for
lunch. After a break we will walk to visit the clay lick of peccaries, dinner
and sleep.
Fourth day: MACAW CLAY LICK
We will wake
up very early. Awakening at dawn allow you to watch the sunrise before our
visit to the clay lick Chuncho. In the lick Chuncho will see a great show of
noisy parrots and macaws which come to the clay lick to find minerals and salts
with digestive properties in the clay wall. Macaws and parrots like the dark blue head,
chirricles, blue and yellow macaw, red and green macaw and the scarlet macaw.
Returning to the lodge, if we are lucky we will see (alligators, turtles and
capybaras, jaguar, tapir) along the Tambopata River.
After our lunch we will go fishing in the
Tambopata River and walking in the jungle before our dinner and sleep in our
lodge
Fifth day: LEAVING THE AMAZON
After our
breakfast we’ll return to Puerto Maldonado then you will be transferred to the
airport or bus station. End of the service.
